Acrylics, pros and cons

Pros:

  • Acrylics dry fast so you can do a layer by layer painting
  • Water soluble
  • No turpentine needed
  • Less health and safety issues
  • More appropriate for children

Cons:

  • Acrylics dry fast so many times you must fight against time
  • Acrylics dry fast so blending is not always easy
  • Acrylics tend to create a patch style of painting especially for beginners
  • Acrylics need more time to become experienced with
  • Acrylics need more preparation if you wish to reduce drying times (e.g. spray the back side of the painting, create a palette on top of a moisture surface to avoid colors drying )
  • Usually cheap acrylics are of less quality that the oil colors of the same price range
  • Selection of acrylic paint is crucial to the outcomes you are going to achieve
